Wendy Goodman, LADAC, C-GC, LPCC

In these times of uncertainty we are faced with many choices, challenges and changes. We encounter stressful circumstances that affect our sense of normalcy, expectations and perspective for the future. Whether we have experienced the death of a friend, partner, patient, coworker, first responder, child, or comrade in arms our lives have been forever changed. Grief and loss is not only related to a physical death but as well we might experience a loss of income, health, job, connection with family and friends, sense of self and identity, self-confidence, trust, patience, security, the past, and the future as we expected it to be. Together as a people we have seen our sense of normalcy, structure and sense of control greatly changed through the COVID 19 crisis.

Those who serve our military throughout the world population (active members, spouses, children, contractors, DOD teachers and others) have their own unique experiences and stressors as they focus on serving the Mission. From deployments, reintegration, adjusting to (PCS) change of station, managing relationships with partners, family, children, work, or being single and away from home for the first time, it becomes essential to discover ways to maintain a work family life balance. At some point there will be choices that involve a change of lifestyle as one moves through either separation or retirement from the military structure into civilian life.

Sometimes our challenges and encounters easily motivate us forward creating growth and an improved sense of self and direction. Other times we feel lost, frustrated, abandoned, overwhelmed, sad, lonely, insecure, or unsure of our future. In difficult happenings we do not necessarily recognize that grief or stress is a normal and natural emotional reaction to unusual or unexpected encounters. At these times we might benefit to open our minds to seek outside support. Many individuals hold back because we are not sure where to go to find solace, support or that safe place where we can step out of the dark just for a few moments in hopes of telling our story and defining a more satisfying future.

Most of us tend to keep private our situations not wanting to be vulnerable, usure how others will think of us and our experiences. Finding a safe, confidential and nonjudgmental person to share these concerns and their affects can assist us to

find comfort, forgiveness, recognize our inbred resiliency to overcome and thus create greater levels of inner balance, self-assuredness and preparedness to manifest a healthier life path.
